Being Good Guests
The Wellstone Center is a living memorial to Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone and his wife, Sheila. At the time of their death in a plane crash in 2002, Senator Wellstone was working on an appropriation to establish a new facility for a community building. Neighborhood House was approached about the project during the appropriation process and now makes Wellstone Center its headquarters. The Neighborhood House was founded in 1897 by the women of Mount Zion Temple to assist Russian Jewish immigrants fleeing their homeland as a result of mounting bigotry and discrimination. Over 110 years later, Neighborhood House is a vibrant, thriving organization serving immigrants, refugees and low-income populations in need of a helping hand.
We are guests in this space in a way that is very different from when we were at an academic campus. As a conference primarily attended by white people, we need to be aware of how we take up space both physically and socially in this community space. We want to be good guests in this space that is predominately used by communities of color, immigrants, English language learners, and at risk youth.
Wellstone Center is a busy facility with many common areas that can be used by anyone. Please be respectful of the needs of everyone in the building. Our home base is room 31 on the lower level and is the only space we will be using throughout the entire conference. Workshop rooms are available for use by BECAUSE attendees between workshops as marked on the schedules by their doors. If you have any questions or concerns about attendees of other events or use of the space, please bring them to the organizers' attention at the conference through the registration desk or by emailing because@bisexualorganizingproject.org after the conference.
This neighborhood is predominantly Latinx. It was important to us as organizers to connect with the neighborhood we are in. One of the ways we have done this is to have our catered meal be provided by El Burrito Mercado, a well known neighborhood business.
We hope you enjoy our new location. We are happy to be welcomed to this beautiful space by the Wellstone Center staff.
